The Power of Walking Away

Ask yourself if you really care about the argument or topic …

Imagine you find yourself in the midst of an argument and, as expected, you become emotionally invested in the conversation. The conversation brings about unnecessary tension and after the conversation is over you find yourself wishing that it had never happened. And while you cannot go back and reverse the situation, you can remove yourself from future situations.

I find that physically walking away from a conversation helps me reasses the value of it. It provides me with the mental space to identify whether I am truly invested in the conversation, or if I just got wrapped up in it, and would rather go without it.

Although this can be done while in the middle of a conversation, it is noticeably harder to execute. I would describe it as stepping outside of yourself. This can be applied to numerous situations and helps manage stressors by determining their relevance. Typically, a conversation can only infuriate you as much as you let it. If you give it no energy/attention, then it won’t have an effect on you.

That’s about it, see ya.
